Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad is a regional (Class II) railroad in the United States. The company encompasses more than 1,100 miles of track located in South Dakota and Minnesota. For legal and regulatory historical reasons, three entities combine to form the complete rail and they are the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad, the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad and Cedar American Rail Holdings. The three companies are operated as a single system under common ownership and common management. The system collectively owns more than 8,000 rail cars and about 200 locomotives. Sioux Falls, S.D., is headquarters for the entire system. The Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad s mainline extends from the Mississippi River at Winona, Minn., across southern Minnesota and central South Dakota to Rapid City. In 1996 the organization acquired more than 200 miles of track from Union Pacific, extending from Colony, Wyo., through Rapid City to Crawford, Neb. The organization began operations in 1986.
