Bob's Resort, Inc is a family owned and operated business that was founded in 1960 by Bob Smith. The Resort is located 17 miles west of Gettysburg, South Dakota along the shores of the Missouri River. Currently, Bob's Resort offers a vast amount of amenities to make for an amazing summer vacation of fishing and boating or a fall getaway to roam the fields of central South Dakota to pheasant hunt. Bob's Resort prides itself on a rich history of family tradition and outstanding service to customers, guests, and friends alike. In 1960, at the time of its opening, Bob's Resort consisted only of a Convenience Store that sold general merchandise, groceries and gas. Shortly thereafter, the area became known as a hotbed for fishing and the bait business began to flourish. As more and more people began traveling to the area for fishing, the need for travelers to stay over night was met when Bob's Resort opened its first motel in 1964. Operated by Bob Smith and wife Norma, the business began to grow again in the early 1970's. To accommodate motel patrons, Bob's Steakhouse was built and began its ongoing reputation of famous char-grilled steaks. In 1983, with its popularity growing, Bob's Steakhouse moved into a larger building that was built next door to the motel. As the years passed and the times changed, so did Bob's Resort. In 1995 Highway 212 was re-routed and the need for relocation was apparent. A portion of land was purchased overlooking both the 212 bridge and Whitlock Bay. In 1998 the resort was moved to its new location and has remained there ever since. What once began as just a small convenience store has now emerged into a business consisting of a steakhouse, motel, cabins, bait shop and convenience store, 60 unit RV campground with full hook-ups, 60 unit mobile home park, boat storage and much, much more. Bob Smith passed away on June 8, 2005 after complications from cancer. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen, and is survived by his wife, Norma Smith, who resides in Gettysburg, South Dakota. Bob's Resort is now operated by three of Bob's four sons. Bobby, Frank, and Jim Smith now run the still-growing resort. The fourth of Bob's sons, Jack Smith currently resides with his family in Denver, CO.
