History Historic Downtown Lofts The John C. Calhoun Hotel welcomed its first guests in 1925. Designed by architects James J. Baldwin and James H. Casey, the hotel was built by Fiske-Carter Construction Company, one of largest contractors in South Carolina in the 1920s. The grand lobby ' which is featured in the 2008 film Leatherheads starring George Clooney and Renee Zellweger ' welcomes residents and guests with its original beamed ceiling, chandeliers, plaster ornamentation, tile floor, marble and mahogany baseboards, and wainscoting. An original oil portrait of John C. Calhoun, the seventh vice president of the United States, hangs above the Sharpe Street entrance. This painting was created for the United States centennial in 1876, when every state commissioned portraits of its prominent figures. The artist is unknown, and the painting is one of only four of Mr. Calhoun in existence. Today, The Calhoun has been given new life by Bruce Alexander and Lifestyle Homes of Distinction, who have meticulously restored the building to its original splendor. The building is once again welcoming people to Downtown Anderson SC with its luxury condominiums and fine appointments.
