Though located in Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island Elementary School is zoned for Sullivans's Island residents. With an enrollment of about 350, it's one of the smallest elementary schools in the county, but it has been known for excellent student achievement over the years.
In 2009, Charleston County Schools closed several facilities over structural concerns. Engineers felt several facilities would not withstand an earthquake. Since then, Sullivan's Island Elementary has been housed at Mamie Whiteside's Elementary School. Plans call for a new Sullivans' Island Elementary to be opened in 2014.
