Founded in 1966, OCAB Head Start Center is a private, nonprofit corporation that serves more than 19,000 individuals and families each year. It also offers a full day pre-school program for 3-, 4- and 5-year old children from low income families. It promotes the cognitive, physical, emotional, psychological and social development of children. It provides special services to children with disabilities, and provides assistance to their families through educational, social, nutritional, health, disabilities, family partnership, transportation and transition services components. The agency promotes housing and economic development through its sister organization, the OCAB Community Development Corporation. It operates the Ujima Village Apartments for the elderly and disabled in Bamberg. Its office is located in Orangeburg, S.C.
