The Rhode Island Superior Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in the Rhode Island Unified State Court System with original jurisdiction in various felony proceedings, in civil matters where the amount in controversy exceeds $10,000 and in the matters of equity. It also hears appeals on civil and criminal cases from the district court. In addition, the court has concurrent jurisdiction with the Supreme Court in issuing the writs of habeas corpus and mandamus. Located in Providence, R.I., the Rhode Island Superior Court is the forum for a trial by jury and a stenographic record of proceedings. Additionally, it has appellate jurisdiction of decisions of local municipal and probate courts.
