Established in 1970, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation oversees programs and policies affecting highways, airports, railroads, ports and waterways. The department, also known as PennDOT, is governed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and manages urban and rural public transportation system. It is responsible for the maintenance of more than 25,000 bridges. With a staff of over 12,000 employees, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation oversees safety and emission inspection programs. The department also operates nearly 15 Welcome Centers along the interstate highways. Its aviation and rail freight division manages grant programs for airports and freight railroads. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation additionally maintains offices legislative and policy issues.
