Earl Simmons Sr. established the current location of Simmons Farm in 1948. He moved to Peters Township with his wife, son and daughter after growing up on a farm in Whitehall, Pa. The primary focus of the farm from the very beginning was to grow fresh fruits and vegetables for retail sale. The Simmons family farms approximately 500 acres. The home farm, located on Simmons Road in McMurray, Pa., consists of 180 acres owned by the Simmons family and approximately 220 acres, which is rented. The Sheffield farm, where blue spruce, white pine and Frazier fir are grown for Christmas, is approximately 40 acres. The family also owns 80 acres along the Ohio River in Portland, Ohio, where the growing season is one to two weeks earlier than in McMurray. Some crops are grown there to get an early start on the season. They are picked and delivered daily to the McMurray farm.
