The three rivers of Pittsburgh (the Allegheny, the Monongahela, and the Ohio) are such important parts of being a Yinzer that the term "three rivers" is in the name of countless businesses and organizations throughout Western PA. In fact, the old multi-use sports stadium was called Three Rivers Stadium. At Point State Park in Downtown Pittsburgh, you can glide your hands and feet through all three rivers at the same time and enjoy some outdoor sun in one of Pittsburgh's best gathering places.
Parking and public transportation at Point State Park
There are a plethora of parking lots near the park, but none are generally cheap (neither is street parking for that matter). The best option would be to Park at one of the cheaper lots on the North Shore (just make sure there is no Pirates or Steelers game happening), the walk across the pedestrian bridge to the park. If taking the subway, exit Gateway Station, then walk down Penn or Liberty Avenue to the park.
Best and worst time to go to Point State Park
The park's signature giant fountain runs from late April to late October, to coincide with the warmer weather. This stretch generally coincides with the park usage, and is the best time to visit Point State Park. The park is mostly empty in the cold snowy months of January and February.
Admission to Point State Park
The park is free and open all year round. Point State Park can also be easily accessed from the North Side or South Side, just cross the closest bridge.
Must see/do at Point State Park
After walking past the outlines of the historic forts that once occupied the site, you must gaze upon the magnificent fountain, sitting right at the point where the Allegheny and the 'Mon' rivers form the Ohio River. The waters are sprayed 150 feet straight up into the air and are a sight to be seen. Also, if you visit in the summer months, take in a festival or get out on the rivers in a kayak.
Other places to visit near Point State Park
To get a grand view of the park, take a short walk across 'Mon' and ride up one of the inclines. From atop Mount Washington, the views of the skyline and the park are unmatched. If you walk across the Allegheny to the north, you can visit the city's museum district and take in the Carnegie Science Center or the Andy Warhol Museum, which honors the Steel City's most iconic artistic son.
