The Pittsburgh Area Theatre Organ Society (PATOS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the theatre pipe organ. Founded in 1970, PATOS aims to reintroduce the captivating sounds of this magnificent musical instrument to the general public through concerts and various programs throughout the year.
Once a common feature in movie palaces, theatre organs gradually lost their prominence with the advent of talkies. The devastating St. Patrick's Day flood of 1936 further diminished their presence in downtown Pittsburgh. Today, PATOS proudly maintains the only operational theatre organ in the Pittsburgh area, a 3-manual 19-rank WurliTzer that has been meticulously restored and expanded over the years. This instrument is showcased in three to five public concerts and programs annually at Keystone Oaks High School, allowing audiences to experience the magic of the theatre pipe organ firsthand.
