A small 10 x 12 foot wood shed on a thirty acre farm in the heart of Lancaster County housed the beginnings of the center in 1965. Originally started as a means of supplementing the meager income realized from a small Amish family farm, the business prospered and by 1968 had expanded into a renovated chicken house. Leacock Coleman then specialized in parts and service and was often called on to locate "hard to get" parts for older lamps and lanterns. In the beginning the business was family-oriented, even Grandpa participated in the opening of mail and packing of daily orders to many small shops and stores in Amish communities throughout the U.S. When the need became apparent in 1971 for additional space for the lamp assembly project and for a display room for the new line of gas appliances and the coal-wood heaters and cook stoves, a warehouse was added to the facility. As local and national sales increased, the Leacock Coleman Center's production facilities and equipment were sold to Leacock Lamp Mfg., Inc This new manufacturing operation is now solely responsible for the manufacturing and production of Leacock lamps. Leacock Coleman Center in now a Wholesale/Retail store for Camping Eqipment, Hearth Accessories and much more! In these energy conscious times, kerosene and gas lamps have become more than collectors items or decorative accessories, as they function as both a useful and convenient source for alternative or emergency lighting ( note the optional electrified burner assembly ). The same factors account for the rise in popularity of cook stoves and other wood burning and alternative energy appliances.
