Mishkan Shalom is a Reconstructionist synagogue, seeking spiritual strength, a feminist reconstruction of Judaism, children as integral, the inclusion of homosexuals in the faith, and the pursuit of justice and peace -- in Philadelphia and the Middle East.
The Reconstructionist movement in Judaism focuses on community (instead of individuality) and active participation in the constant interpretation of the scriptures -- which guide, rather than govern.

The congregation also operates a school which serves more than 150 students.
