Macungie's Borough Hall was originally built in 1906 as a firehouse, and retains the whistle as proof. Today, the building is home to the borough offices, the Macungie Police Department and several meeting rooms. The borough itself was founded in 1776 by Peter Miller and was called Millerstown until 1875 when the name was changed to Macungie so the area would not be confused with the Millerstown in Perry County. The name Macungie, in its various spellings, is a Lenne Lenape Indian name meaning "feeding place of the bears" or "bear swamp." The borough was incorporated in 1857.
