Fannie Mae is a shareholder-owned company that provides housing and real estate loans to local communities throughout the United States. It serves mortgage bankers and other lenders, including mortgage companies, commercial banks, credit unions, and state and local housing finance agencies to help homebuyers and homeowners. The company also provides lending support to pension funds, insurance companies, securities dealers and other financial institutions. It additionally offers issue debt securities to investors. Fannie Mae was established in 1938 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt to expand the flow of mortgage funds in all communities under all economic conditions, and to help lower the costs to buy a home. The company maintains a staff of more than 5,700 employees. Fannie Mae maintains one of its regional offices in Philadelphia.
