Pennsylvania is the last bastion for drive-in movie theaters. The state has the most in the country, even if that is not that many, but Dependable Drive In is one of the gems. Located 18 miles west of the Pittsburgh, the old fashioned theater is the perfect place to spend a summer evening with the family watching the latest movies from the comfort of your own car.
Parking at Dependable Drive In
This seems fairly obvious, but you have to drive to the theater. Motorcycles or scooters are not permitted. Once inside however, you must follow the parking rules listed on signs throughout the theater. For example, compact cars in the front rows, and larger trucks and SUVs in the back.
Best and worst time to go to Dependable Drive In
The most popular days to visit are Fridays and Saturdays and it can get packed. Try visiting on Sunday or the other weekdays for a more relaxed experience. Also, keep an eye for rainy conditions. Watching a movie with the windshield wipers on cab be incredibly annoying.
Admission to Dependable Drive In
Admission is per person, not per car, so loading up eight people into the van will not save you any money. However, adults (12 years old and up) are $7-$9 and children ages 3-11 are $3-$5. This price includes a double feature. The theater is open all year round as well.
Must see/do at Dependable Drive In
Drive ins like Dependable offer so much more than traditional movie theaters. People usually arrive early to let their kids play and roam the grounds, while parents chat with friends over a picnic (yes, you can bring in your own food). And speaking of food, the snack bar actually offers good food like freshly fried funnel cakes and grilled burgers for affordable prices.
Other places to visit near Dependable Drive In
The Montour Trail, which begins at nearby Coraoplis, is a much beloved biking and walking trail that extends 46 miles on the path of a former railroad. The movie theater is also close to the very popular shopping destination of the Mall at Robinson and Bocktown Beer and Grill, which has an extensive tap list focusing on Pennsylvania brews.
Insider tip for visitors to Dependable Drive In
Remember that you are not at a traditional movie theater, so the normal courteous rules do not apply. If you keep your windows up, you can chat with your friend, shout "look out!" at the screen, and play on your cell phone as much as you like. And to be honest, you should. Exploit the fact that you are at a drive in. Heck, even try to get some necking in, if you are so lucky.
