History
Community Forge began in January 2017 with the goal of transforming the former Johnston Elementary School into a community resource. A group of 8 young founders with Pittsburgh ties purchased the building and connected with local residents. Together, they crafted a vision for the space focused on creating opportunities for youth, entrepreneurs, and neighbors in Wilkinsburg. We developed on a social-enterprise model, through which office and event rentals will sustainably support subsidized and free opportunities for locals. Through the support of thousands of volunteer hours, we renovated 45,000 sq.ft. of space and officially reopened the building in January 2018. Today, Community Forge serves 150+ youth through programs, hosts over 100 community events annually, and is home to 30+ small businesses through office space and coworking.
