The company s roots date back to 1860 when Consolidation Coal Company was formed from the merger of several small coal mining firms in western Maryland. It is a majority shareholder in one of the largest U.S. producers of coalbed methane, CNX Gas Corporation. CONSOL Energy has annual revenues of $2.8 billion.
