Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 is a nonprofit public educational service agency formed in 1971. It serves more than 35 rural public school districts, over five vocational technical schools and nearly 70 nonpublic schools in Bedford, Blair, Cambria and Somerset counties in Pennsylvania. The agency provides curricular development programs and maintains one of its offices in Altoona, Pa. It also offers educational management and pupil personnel services and serves as a liaison between school districts and state and federal educational agencies. Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 provides functional vision and learning media assessments and assistive technology evaluations for students with visual impairments. It operates adapted buses, lifts and ramps for children with disabilities. The agency s speech and language support program includes screening and evaluation of communication and swallowing disorders, in-home therapy for preschoolers and assistive technology support. Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 additionally offers nonviolent crisis intervention services.
