Located in Hastings, PA, the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is a significant landmark that played a pivotal role in American transportation history. As the first railroad to cross the Allegheny Mountains, it served as the final link in the Pennsylvania Main Line Canal, providing a direct route between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. This historic site catered to a diverse range of individuals, including merchants, passengers, slaves seeking freedom, and soldiers during the Mexican War.

Visitors to the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site can explore various attractions, such as the Summit Level Visitor Center, where they can gain an overview of the park, view exhibits, and watch an introductory film. Additionally, they can tour the Engine House No. 6 Exhibit Shelter, a replica of the building that housed stationary steam engines, and explore the Lemon House, a historic tavern from the days of the Allegheny Portage Railroad. For outdoor enthusiasts, the site offers the opportunity to hike or bike to the Staple Bend Tunnel, the first railroad tunnel in America, located just a short drive away from the Visitor Center in Mineral Point.

This is one interesting historic site. We watched the short movie at the visitor center before walking around the area. Friendly staff. Definitely worth stopping by.
