Established in 1969, the Oregon Department of Transportation develops programs related to the state s system of highways, roads, bridges and railways. It supports various transportation safety programs, as well as provides driver and vehicle licensing and motor carrier regulations. It operates communication, central services, highway, rail and public transit divisions. The Oregon Department of Transportation additionally maintains motor carrier transportation, safety and development divisions. The department also maintains carrier maintenance, over dimensional permit, and registration and support services units. In addition, it offers audit, financial, human resources and information systems-related services. The Oregon Department of Transportation operates a history center. The department maintains a location in Salem, Ore.
