Established in 1931, Oregon State Police is a full-service statewide law enforcement agency that promotes public safety, identifies and solves criminal cases and safeguards citizens rights. It provides rural patrol and assistance to local city police and sheriffs' departments. The agency is organized into intergovernmental services bureau, bureau of investigations and central operations command. Oregon State Police conducts several specialized programs for transportation safety, as well as serves as the point of contact to the National Office of Homeland Security. It has a Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) that specializes in bomb disposal and hostage and barricaded gunman situations. With a location in The Dalles, Ore., Oregon State Police offers various forensic services, including DNA identification, automated fingerprint identification and computerized criminal history files.
