HistoryShelterCare was organized in 1970 to serve homeless families. Today, we continue to provide Housing Services for Families in both Short Term Housing and Permanent Supported Housing (The Keystone). The agency expanded its mission in 1978 to provide shelter and services for individuals challenged by the disabling symptoms of a severe, persistent mental illness (SPMI). Hawthorn Apartments (1982) hosted a supported housing community with 35 apartment units. Supported housing expanded in 1994. Garden Place (2001) was an intensive residential program serving 12 individuals. SPMI clients also were served at The Afiya Apartments (2010) in Springfield. Today, ShelterCare provides supported housing at our Medical Recuperation (2013) units and The Commons on MLK (2021).SpecialtiesShelterCare offers a range of housing solutions combined with support services for vulnerable community members who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness. Our programs help people keep their current housing or recover lost housing. Then we work with clients to build the skills necessary to stabilize their housing.
