Tulsa International Airport is approximately five miles from downtown Tulsa and is owned by the city. TUL was known as the Tulsa Municipal Airport when the city originally acquired it in 1929, but changed the name in 1963 to include international. The airport has a storied history, including being the busiest airport in the world in 1930, surpassing airports in Berlin, Paris and London for sheer numbers of passengers. The airport served as a plant during World War II and continues to be used for the assembly of school busses.
American Airlines calls 260 acres at TUL home and houses nearly 600 airplanes there. The company employs over 6,400 people making a huge economic impact on the state of Oklahoma.
