The Scratching Post is a nonprofit organization providing shelter for stray and abandoned cats. Located in Silverton, Ohio, the shelter has been in operation since 1990. It finds homes for more than 400 cats annually, and houses over 50 animals at a time. Every animal admitted to the shelter is seen by a veterinarian and tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus. Cats are admitted into the shelter after being vaccinated, spayed and neutered, and passing various health screenings. Cats that are too young to be spayed and neutered are confined to a separate kitten room. The shelter organizes various events and fund-raisers, such as the adopt-a-shelter-cat tour, annual fund-raiser auctions and catSNIP fever.
