Established in 1948, the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, also known as ORSANCO, is an interstate organization that operates programs to improve water quality in the Ohio River. The commission monitors the chemical and physical properties of waterways, as well as performs biological assessments and conducts special surveys and studies. It is also responsible for setting waste water discharge standards. The Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission coordinates emergency response activities for spills and accidental discharges. The commission promotes public participation in Ohio River Sweep and RiverWatchers Volunteer Monitoring programs. In addition, it administers source water protection and watershed pollutant reduction programs.
