Founded in 1972, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, also known as Ohio EPA, is a state agency that establishes and enforces standards for air, water, waste management and cleanup of sites contaminated with hazardous substances. The agency operates the divisions of air pollution control, surface water, hazardous waste management, drinking and ground waters, and solid and infectious waste management. It provides the Compliance Assistance and Pollution Prevention program. Ohio EPA offers environmental education programs and pollution prevention assistance. The agency issues permits to regulate industries that pollute rivers and streams through air emission and wastewater discharges. It provides technical assistance to help regulated facilities understand and follow environmental laws and permit requirements. Ohio EPA additionally takes enforcement action against facilities that violate environmental laws.
