The Newark Police Division, founded in 1870, employs over 78 sworn officers and more than 20 full- and part-time civilian employees who provide support in various areas, such as dispatching, recordkeeping and clerical assignments. It has administration, patrol, detectives, records and dispatch divisions. The police division is governed by the city of Newark, Ohio, which also operates several other departments, including fire, community development, animal control, building code, engineering, information systems, litter prevention and recycling, streets, parks and recreation, income tax, and water and wastewater.
