Headlands Beach State Park has the largest natural sand beach in the state. It opened as Painesville State Park in 1953. Headlands, on Lake Erie, makes for a good summer spot for swimmers. There are tables, grills, a concession booth and a pavilion that can be rented. The state park houses several plant species that are generally seen only on the Atlantic coast. Headlands includes fishing and hiking trails, and for those who fish, there are several species of bass, bluegill, yellow perch, walleye, steelhead trout, catfish, crappie, carp and bullhead.
