Offering classic career and casual clothing for plus-size women at moderate prices, Catherines Stores has more than 400 stores in 44 states. The business fills a much-needed niche by recognizing the fashion needs of women who wear sizes 16W to 26W and 28W to 34W, a size range not readily offered. Petite lengths in sizes 16WP to 26WP are also available in over half of the stores. The company originated in Memphis, Tenn. in 1960, with a single store owned by Catherine Weaver, whose goal was to bring style to the plus-size market. As the concept became successful, more stores opened throughout the South. In 1960, a group of investors bought the chain, then called Catherines Stout Shoppes, and formed the Catherines Stores.
