BNI Coal owns and operates the Center Mine in North Dakota. Its surface mine supplies lignite coal for the units of Young Station. The company s mining process disturbs and reclaims more than 200 acres per year. BNI Coal supplies lignite coal-based electricity for several farms and businesses in eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota. The company supplies over 4 million tons of lignite coal annually. It maintains a staff of nearly 135 employees. BNI Coal operates engineering and purchasing and maintenance departments. It maintains a fleet of loading, hauling and reclamation equipment, such as loaders, diesel coal trucks, scrappers and motor graders. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of ALLETE.
