Founded in 1986, the Southern Environmental Law Center primarily represents groups seeking to conserve and clean up the ecosystem, including clean water, air quality, wetlands, wildlife and wilderness lands, and ensure habitable communities throughout the Southeast. The firm represents environmental groups in the courts that seek legislation to reduce emissions from coal-burning power plants and automobiles. It also is an advocate for groups that seek to keep the area s rivers free of pollution and waste materials. In addition, the Southern Environmental Law Center represents environmentalists who seek to safeguard the national forest in the Southern Appalachians area of North Carolina. It maintains a location in Chapel Hill, N.C.
