History
In 1910, three small rural communities in northwestern Stokes County, North Carolina came together to create the Union Mill - a grist operation to grind their wheat, corn and rye. The mill was built on the banks of the Dan River and local Dee Jessup was made the first miller. One of those children, Porter Garfield (born: 1918) grew up at his father's heels, learning - and enjoying - the miller's trade. In 1937, Dee died and left the run of the mill to his son. Porter renamed the mill in 1943, giving it his family name, and worked hard to see it flourish. He added generators and updated motors, he ground feed for the farm animals and made it the hubbub of the community. Porter passed away in 2000 but new owners Andrew Jones and Marga Eichleay have transformed the Mill into a unique outdoor recreation destination that respects the history of the site and the countless visitors through the years. Join us now for camping, tubing, movies and music on the Dan River.
