Durham Board of Education, with its office located in Durham, N.C., administers the school board district. The board of education consists of more than seven elected members and the superintendent of schools serves as its secretary. It delivers instructional programs and services that enhance the academic and personal potential of its students, resulting in successful graduates. The board governs more than 40 schools with over 32,000 students that offer classes from preschool through grade 12, including a special school that assists students in regaining academic progress during hospitalization and rehabilitation. Its elementary, middle and high schools offer courses that follow the requirements of the board, and core subjects include English language arts, science, computer studies, social science and mathematics. Durham Board of Education encourages its schools to offer a wide range of sports, in addition to membership in service organizations, honor societies, student government, publications and academic clubs.
