The Dare County Sheriff's Office is a law enforcement agency that works to maintain peace, protect lives and property, and apprehend accused and suspected criminals. It operates a communication center that coordinates responses to various police, fire and medical emergency cases. The department supports a therapeutic wilderness program that provides opportunities to at-risk youths to participate in several group activities, such as whitewater canoeing, backpacking and caving, horseback riding and mountain climbing and rappelling. The Dare County Sheriff's Office also administers a bicycle safety program that conducts classes for various schools, churches and youth-oriented organizations and focuses on teaching children about traffic laws, bicycle safety, and the mechanics of bicycle riding and maintenance.
