Established in 1884, Central Prison is one of the first-built prisons in North Carolina. It is spread over an area of more than 30 acres and is enclosed by a double-wire fence with razor ribbon on top. Central Prison s facilities include a plate fabrication unit, print shop, mental health care wings, and a more than 85-bed acute care hospital with a pharmacy, mobile surgical unit, operating rooms and X-ray laboratories. It offers various job assignments, including barbering, janitorial work, and kitchen, laundry and canteen labor for inmates according to their skill levels. Additionally, it provides substance abuse group therapy, Bible study and worship services, as well as conducts various recreational activities. Central Prison is located in Raleigh, N.C., and is administered by the North Carolina Department of Correction, which manages various prisons and correctional facilities.
