The Armstrong State Fish Hatchery, located in Marion, NC, is a coldwater trout hatchery that consists of outdoor raceways and indoor egg- and fingerling-rearing facilities. With its clear, cold water from the Armstrong Creek watershed, the hatchery provides an ideal environment for raising trout. It is responsible for stocking catchable-size trout in the public trout waters of 11 counties in the northern section of North Carolina's mountain region.
Established in 1957 and renovated in 2017, the Armstrong Hatchery maintains its own strains of brook and brown trout broodstocks, which have been bred and maintained on-site for 40 years. Each fall, the fish are spawned and the eggs are incubated until they reach the eyed-egg stage. The eggs are then transferred to Marion Hatchery for final hatching and rearing to fingerling size. The fingerlings are later returned to Armstrong for grow-out to catchable 10-inch size, with the hatchery staff providing them with a prepared diet for optimal growth.
