Wegmans Egg Farm is the chicken egg production center for Wegmans Food Markets, a chain of supermarkets that operate in the Northeast United States. Wegmans Egg Farm is near Wolcott in Wayne County, N.Y. It has supplied eggs to Wegmans Food Markets since 1968. Wegmans Egg Farm employees care for the flocks of chickens laying around the facility. These birds are not scratching in a barnyard. They are fed and cared for inside chicken cages in environmentally-controlled laying houses. In 1999, The United Egg Producers commissioned an independent Scientific Advisory Committee (an objective, unpaid 10-person committee of scientists, academicians, U.S. Department of Agriculture officials and humane association members) to study egg industry practices related to animal welfare. Improvements on existing guidelines were suggested as were more aggressive standards based on science. After implementing the new guidelines, Wegmans Egg Farm began its investment in an annual USDA validation process. Passing this validation allows Wegmans to use the Animal Care Certified seal that is on every egg carton at Wegmans Food Market.
