The Webster Apartments were founded in 1916 "for occupancy by unmarried working women regardless of their religious belief or nationality and wherein they find comfortable and attractive homes." The Webster is located in mid-Manhattan, between 9th and 10th Avenues. It is within easy walking distance to the Broadway theater district, Madison Square Garden, the Javits Convention Center and Macy's Department Store. The Webster is a 13-story brick building with 373 single rooms. Each room has a bed, dresser, desk, bookcase, chair, sink, clothes closet and telephone. Bath areas with individual showers and toilets are located on each floor. The Webster has a large walled garden for its guests to enjoy. In good weather, many women take meals outdoors and frequently spend quiet times outside in the magnificent gardens. The facilities include a large dining room, elegant common rooms, a fine quiet library, television and recreation rooms with pianos and several small lounges for guests.
