History
Located in the heart of historic Sunnyside Gardens, Queens, the park, along with its surrounding planned community, was designed by architects and urban planners Henry Wright, Clarence Stein, and Marjorie Sewell Cautley in 1926. Conceived as an affordable alternative to life in the bustling city, Sunnyside Gardens was a place where residents of all backgrounds could become active in their community, raise a family, and relax in the ample green space of the park. Today as the city continues to expand and rise up, this garden oasis and its sense of community remain intact. One of only two private parks in New York City, Sunnyside Gardens relies heavily on the generous spirit of its members; to maintain the park, its amenities, and to host many social events throughout the year. Sunnyside Gardens Park is committed to providing a safe place for children to grow and play as they develop that same commitment to their community, so the park may be a welcoming place for generations to come.
