Lakeview resident Ellen Cooper first introduced the idea of creating a Baptist church in the community in 1925. During the following year, Reverend Benjamin Agnew and all of the interested parties called a meeting and invited leaders of the neighboring Shiloh Baptist Church of Rockville Centre to attend. Soon after, they erected St. John the Baptist Church on a plot of land donated by the Dames family. By the late sixties, the congregation had grown and needed a larger space to worship, so they started fundraising. By 1983, they moved into their new church building, which was located down the block from their first home and began worshiping in the basement sanctuary until the upstairs was completed two years later. Today, the church holds services in both sanctuaries, as well as Bible Study, Sunday School and various programs for young people and adults. They also have various choirs, a dance group and 17 different ministries that serve the community and those in need.
