History
The Sackets Harbor Visitor Center is located in Village Founder Augustus Sacket's former home. Mr. Sacket, a lawyer and real estate developer from Long Island, purchased a tract of wilderness land in northern New York in 1801, and he built his Palladian-style home here in 1802. The Village, and even Mr. Sacket's home, played a vital role in the War of 1812. The house served a variety of purposes over the years, and it was acquired by the Village in 1980 and later renovated with the assistance of New York State. It opened to the public as the Sackets Harbor Visitor Center in 1995.
