Formed in 1963 to combat shoplifting, the Rye Youth Council has evolved into a community resource for kids of all ages, from elementary to high school.
It utilizes Youth Advocates, who work on communication and life skills with kids in a fun and relaxed environment. The high school program includes outreach to the community, such as Adopt-A-Grandfriend, where students are paired with elderly residents in a Mount Vernon nursing home and Teaching for Change, a tutoring program, which encourages high school students to teach English to day laborers in Port Chester.
The organization is based out of a house on Locust Avenue in downtown Rye.
