The Legal Division provides legal advice and counsel to the commissioner, directors and employees of the Department of Social Services, which is administered by Onondaga County in New York. The division s fair hearing unit represents the department in administrative hearings. It is also responsible for investigating and deterring fraud cases concerning temporary assistance, Medicaid, day care and food stamps. The Legal Division operates a social security transition unit that assists the applicants and recipients of temporary assistance programs. The division s resource recovery unit processes various mortgages, indigent burials and estates. It helps in obtaining necessary medical evaluation and documentation credentials.
