P.S. 256, also known as The Benjamin Banneker School, is a public school that serves grades PK-5. The school's principal is Sharyn Hemphill. Special Programs at P.S. 256 include Reading Recovery, Power Push Saturdays for Academic Achievement, Banneker Success, Extended Day Academy, Generation Next Homework Help and the Banneker Read, Write, and Ride Reading and Bicycle Initiative.
There are no sports programs, but the school's physical education department teaches tennis and soccer, along with other popular sports, such as basketball and volleyball. The school shares the third floor of its building with the Community Partnership Charter School.
