History
The land that is now Pine Crest was first documented on the 1612 map of John Smith, originally called the Sasquesahanough. The Tuscarora Indians once roamed this land in the early 1700's. Their fortified village, Ouaquaga, was an outpost of the British Colonies. The village was destroyed by Colonial forces in 1778. The region was first settled by outsiders around 1785, with the Town of Windsor formed in 1807, the year following the formation of Broome County. In the late 1890's, the Town of Windsor became famous for the manufacture of buggy whips. The land where the campground is now located was owned by the Beebe family in the early 1900's and was a farm called Sunnyside. In 1910, the farm was sold to Charles Frederick Wright, a Pennsylvania's State Treasurer. When steamships plied the river, the Steamer Ermine would land here with her passengers to have picnics, so it seems fitting that Pine Crest was founded in 1962 and has been in operation as a campground since then.
