History
While Alcoholics Anonymous is helpful to many people, its tenets about problem drinking - that if you have trouble with alcohol you must stop immediately and forever or you'll end up in the hospital, dead or in jail - have not been supported by research. In fact most people who have a period of drinking too much can cut down on their drinking instead of giving it up, and they can do so by practicing a scientifically-tested method that teaches them six powerful skills. Over 90% of alcohol treatment programs in the country use only an Alcoholics Anonymous-based approach, but I use two evidence-based treatments - Motivational Interviewing and the Community Reinforcement Approach - to help people cut down on their drinking instead of giving it up.
