Nativity of the Mother of God Russian Orthodox Church in Albany, NY has a rich history dating back to the late 1940s when Russian refugees settled in Displaced Persons Camps in Germany. Under the spiritual guidance of Archimandrite Vitaly Ustinov, a chapel and church school were established, becoming the center of life for the orthodox families in the camp. In the late 1950s, the church found a permanent home in the Anglican Church of the Holy Innocent, which was transformed into an Orthodox Church with the addition of a hand-carved iconostasis and an onion dome.
Over the years, the church has been served by various priests, including the beloved rector Mitered Protopriest Wsevolod Drobot. As the neighborhood declined, the church faced continuous renovation and maintenance challenges, leading to the decision to sell the building in 1984. The parishioners then began attending services at the Schenectady Parish, The Protection of the Mother of God, until the Eastern Diocese officially combined in 1987.
