Formed on Dec. 18, 1860, the Nanuet Fire Engine Company started as the Torrent Engine Company No. 1 and is Rockland County's sixth-oldest company. Its present name was adopted on April 5, 1862, which was when it received its charter. On April 1, 1945, the firehouse burned down, and was rebuilt soon after. Over the years, many firefighters have lost their lives and are memorialized in plaques in front of the firehouse.
