Located about 15 minutes outside of the eclectic village of New Paltz, NY, Minnewaska State Park Preserve is the premier hiking location in the Hudson Valley. There are an endless number of trail combinations at Minnewaska. Hikers of all levels and abilities are sure to find a trail that will suit them. Visitors should be sure to check out Awosting Falls which is located close to the lower parking lot. Lake Awosting is a hidden gem that is accessible by foot or bike and is open during the summer for swimming, complete with a rock beach and lifeguard. For visitors who wish for a challenging, yet rewarding, hike should try Gertrude's Nose. It is a long, strenuous loop that provides some of the most beautiful views.
Best and Worst Times to Go to Minnewaska State Park Preserve
Because the park is very popular with both locals and travelers, the weekends during the spring, summer, and fall are always jam-packed with hikers, swimmers, rock climbers, and picnickers. Luckily, the park is large enough that it is still possible to enjoy a peaceful hike. For those who really want to beat the rush, going on a weekday morning when the park opens at 9:00 AM is a surefire way to find complete quiet.
Admission to Minnewaska State Park Preserve
It is $10.00 a carload to enter the park. From the main gate, visitors can choose to either park in the lower Awosting Lot or drive up the hill to park in the upper lot. Peter's Kill, which is a part of the preserve, has a separate entrance about half a mile from the main lot. Admission is the same for either entrance.
Wildlife at Minnewaska State Park Preserve
There are several Bird Conservation Areas located in the park. These protected sites are used for research but are also great places for bird watchers. The park hosts early morning bird watching sessions every Tuesday from April to mid-October. There is also a variety of northeastern species that visitors may encounter, including deer and the occasional bear. For visitors who plan on making multiple trips to Minnewaska throughout the year might consider purchasing an Empire Pass through the New York State website. For a one time fee of $65.00 visitors gain free entry to all New York State parks. This is a great way to save some money and avoid the $10.00 fee.
