The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is the largest unit in the Attorney General's Criminal Division. The unit exists to investigate and penalize companies and individuals who engage in fraudulent billing of Medicaid, a state-run program that provides health benefits for New Yorkers who cannot afford their own care. The unit also deals with the abuse or negligence of individuals residing in hospitals, nursing homes or other similar facilities.
New York is one of 49 states that have a Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The Pearl River office is one of seven state-wide offices. The unit's special project division is primarily housed in the New York City and Pearl River offices.
